Côte d'Ivoire food labelling requirements for prepacked foods

Côte d'Ivoire's core food labelling law is Décret n° 92-487 of 26 August 1992 on labelling and presentation of foods, which is in force. For prepacked food, these are mandatory:

  • name of the food;
  • ingredients in descending order by weight, including additives and flavourings;
  • net quantity;
  • durability or consumption date and any storage conditions;
  • name and address of the responsible operator;
  • origin or provenance; and
  • instructions for use where needed.

Labels must be accurate and must not mislead about composition or origin. The national standards body, Côte d'Ivoire Normalisation (CODINORM), lists NI 3500, Labelling of prepacked foods, in its catalogue.

Côte d'Ivoire nutrition label requirements

The Ministry of Commerce's consumer guidance treats nutrition information as mandatory on food labels. It lists energy value and nutrients such as protein, carbohydrate, fat, dietary fibre and sodium, as well as vitamins and minerals.

CODINORM product standards refer to both NI 3500 and the Codex General Standard for the Labelling of Prepackaged Foods. A foreign nutrition panel should be checked against these rather than assumed to comply, and product standards may add requirements.

Côte d'Ivoire food label language requirements

Mandatory information must be at least in French, the official language. Other languages may be added voluntarily, provided the French text stays complete and nothing contradicts it.

Information must be clear, readable and not misleading about the food's nature, composition, treatment or origin.

Côte d'Ivoire imported food labelling and conformity

Imported foods must meet the national labelling rules before sale, including French. The Ministry of Commerce also runs an import conformity verification programme (CIV VOC): products in its scope must meet Ivorian, regional or international standards, and a Certificate of Conformity is mandatory where the programme requires it.

Check labels before shipment, since the certificate covers conformity with the applicable standards. CODINORM sets the standards, and Décret n° 2016-1152 of 28 December 2016 made certain standards compulsory.
