Nutrition labelling requirements in Kenya

Packaged food sold in Kenya must carry a nutrition declaration under KS 2712:2018 (KEBS). This page covers the Kenya - KEBS KS 2712:2018 format: English/Swahili per Kenya Bureau of Standards. A compliant Kenyan nutrition label declares 7 mandatory nutrients: energy, protein, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, total sugars and sodium. Values are declared per 100 g or 100 ml and per serving, both columns required, with energy in both kcal and kJ, and sodium rather than salt. The panel is headed "Nutrition Information". English is required on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. NFL builds a print-ready Kenyan nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for Kenya automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Kenya food labelling requirements for prepackaged foods

Labelling is mandatory for manufactured, processed or prepacked food sold in Kenya under the Food, Drugs and Chemical Substances Act and its regulations, in force. The Food Labelling, Additives and Standards Regulations require the main panel to show the brand or trade name where applicable, the common name of the food and the net contents by weight, volume or count.

Foods with more than one ingredient must carry a full ingredient list, by common names in descending order of proportion, which is mandatory. Preservatives, added colours and artificial or imitation flavourings must be declared where used, and the label must give the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor.

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has adopted the East African standard for general labelling as KS EAS 38:2014, which covers the wording and descriptive matter on labels of prepackaged foods for consumers or catering.

Nutrition labelling under KS EAS 803

Kenya's nutrition labelling standard is KS EAS 803:2023, the second edition of the East African standard, which replaced EAS 803:2014. It sets requirements for nutrition labelling of prepackaged foods other than foods for special dietary uses.

General labelling is mandatory under Kenyan food law, but a universal requirement for every prepackaged food to carry a nutrition panel cannot be read from the existence of KS EAS 803 alone. A nutrition declaration becomes mandatory where a compulsory standard, product-specific requirement or nutrition claim calls for it, and KS EAS 803 then sets how it is presented.

The label name sometimes quoted for Kenya, KS 2712:2018, is not listed by KEBS as the current general nutrition labelling instrument; KS EAS 38 and KS EAS 803 are the relevant standards.

English language rules for Kenyan food labels

Required label statements must be in English under the Food, Drugs and Chemical Substances (General) Regulations, which is mandatory. Kiswahili or other languages may be added, but they do not replace the English text.

Where another language is used, the English must be in type at least as large as the other language, and the required English information must appear on the main panel. All mandatory information must be clear, prominent and easy to read under normal conditions of purchase.

Kiswahili is an official language of Kenya, but for food labels the legal requirement is English.

Imported food: PVoC, destination inspection and the KEBS import mark

Imported food must meet Kenyan standards and regulations, which is mandatory. KEBS runs the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme, under which compliant consignments receive a Certificate of Conformity before shipment; goods outside the programme may face destination inspection on arrival.

Imported products covered by KEBS's scheme for the Kenyan market must also carry the Import Standardization Mark, and KEBS lists foodstuffs among those products. Importers apply with conformity and import documents.

Food that breaches Kenyan food law cannot normally be imported for sale, though the regulations allow relabelling or reconditioning under official supervision in defined cases.

Common questions

Is nutrition labelling mandatory in Kenya?
General labelling is mandatory, and KS EAS 803:2023 sets nutrition labelling requirements. A nutrition panel is mandatory where a compulsory standard, product rule or claim requires it, rather than for every food automatically.
What must a prepackaged food label include in Kenya?
The common name, net contents, ingredient list, declared preservatives, colours and flavourings where used, and the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor.
Which language must a Kenyan food label use?
English. Kiswahili or other languages may be added, but the English must be at least the same size.
What is KS EAS 803:2023?
Kenya's adoption of the East African standard on nutrition labelling, second edition, replacing EAS 803:2014.
Do imported foods need PVoC or KEBS marks?
Yes where they apply: a PVoC Certificate of Conformity or destination inspection, and the Import Standardization Mark for products covered by KEBS's scheme.
Who regulates food labelling in Kenya?
