Nutrition labelling requirements in Paraguay

Packaged food sold in Paraguay must carry a nutrition declaration under INAN + Mercosur GMC Res. 46/03 & 47/03. This page covers the Paraguay - INAN + Mercosur format: Spanish (Guaraní optional); Mercosur GMC Res. 46/03 & 47/03. A compliant Paraguayan nutrition label declares 8 mandatory nutrients: valor energético, carbohidratos, proteínas, grasas totales, grasas saturadas, grasas trans, fibra alimentaria and sodio. Values are declared per serving as sold, with energy in both kcal and kJ, and sodium rather than salt. The panel is headed "Información Nutricional". Spanish is required on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. NFL builds a print-ready Paraguayan nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for Paraguay automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Paraguay food labelling requirements for packaged foods

As a Mercosur member, Paraguay applies the Mercosur technical regulation on labelling of packaged foods, MERCOSUR/GMC/RES. N° 26/03, incorporated by Decree N° 8064/2006 and in force. The mandatory particulars are:

  • name or sales name of the food;
  • list of ingredients;
  • net contents;
  • origin;
  • importer's name and address for imported foods;
  • lot identification;
  • date marking; and
  • preparation and use instructions where applicable.

Labels must not mislead about the food's nature, composition, quantity or origin.

Sanitary registration with the Instituto Nacional de Alimentación y Nutrición (INAN) is mandatory for processed and packaged foods sold nationally unless exempt, and INAN reviews the label during registration.

Paraguay nutrition label requirements under Mercosur

Nutrition labelling is mandatory under MERCOSUR/GMC/RES. N° 46/03, also incorporated by Decree 8064/2006. The declaration covers energy, carbohydrates, protein, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, dietary fibre and sodium, per serving with a household measure and percentage of daily value.

Reference serving sizes come from MERCOSUR/GMC/RES. N° 47/03. Some foods are exempt, but INAN says any voluntary declaration on an exempt food must still follow Resolution 46/03.

Paraguay food label language requirements and imported foods

Mandatory information must be in Spanish, the language of the country of consumption under Resolution 26/03. Other languages, including Guaraní, may be added.

Imports may use a complementary label applied at origin or in Paraguay; if applied in Paraguay, it must be on before the product is sold. For registration, INAN asks for original or proposed labels in Spanish (or with an official translation) plus a compliant complementary label.

INAN oversight and Paraguay front-of-pack warnings

The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare (MSPBS) is the health authority, with INAN as its technical body for food and nutrition.

Paraguay has also passed Law N° 7092 on front-of-pack warning labelling, requiring Spanish warnings on covered packaged foods that exceed limits for sugars, saturated fat or sodium. INAN has published a draft implementing decree for consultation, so detailed technical rules are transitional until a final decree is confirmed.

  • Exports print-ready vector PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG, and EPS
