A compliant Senegalese nutrition label declares 7 mandatory nutrients: énergie, protéines, matières grasses, dont saturées, glucides, dont sucres and sodium. Senegal food labelling requirements for prepacked foods

Senegal's general labelling standard is NS ECOSTAND 050, General standard for the labelling of prepacked foods, adopted by the Association Sénégalaise de Normalisation (ASN) from the harmonised ECOWAS standard. ASN lists it as a compulsory Senegalese standard, in force for prepacked foods sold to consumers or for catering.

Because the standard is a national adoption of an ECOWAS text, Senegal's rules line up with other ECOWAS members that have adopted the same standard, rather than relying only on voluntary Codex guidance.

Food control more broadly rests on Law n° 66-48 of 27 May 1966 on control of food products and repression of fraud, which is in force alongside the standard.

Senegal food label language requirements and mandatory particulars

French is mandatory on labels of products for Senegalese consumers, according to the official import procedures. A label only in another language does not comply.

The import procedures list these mandatory label items:

  • product name;
  • composition;
  • net weight or volume;
  • manufacturing date;
  • expiry date;
  • country of origin;
  • importer's contact details; and
  • nutrition information conforming to Codex Alimentarius.

These sit within the wider NS ECOSTAND 050 rules, and any ASN product-specific standard adds its own requirements.

Senegal nutrition label requirements

For imported food, nutrition information is mandatory and must follow Codex Alimentarius requirements, according to the official import procedures. Senegal does not publish its own nutrient table on that page, so the Codex nutrition labelling guidelines are the practical reference: energy, protein, available carbohydrate, fat, saturated fat, sodium and total sugars.

Do not borrow nutrient formats or reference values from another country without checking them against Codex and ASN requirements.

Senegal imported food labelling and regulatory control

Imported food goes through mandatory sanitary and technical checks before release. The Division de la Consommation et de la Sécurité des Consommateurs, part of the internal commerce administration, issues the Déclaration d'Importation de Produits Alimentaires (DIPA) for relevant food imports.

ASN manages standards and technical barriers to trade, while sanitary controls depend on the type of product. A label that complies in the country of origin is not enough if the French language and Senegalese particulars are missing.
